From Shirk to Tawheed: Reaching the Purity of Faith

yazı resim

Faith is the fundamental pillar of a Muslim's existence. This faith is shaped by complete submission to Allah, deep devotion, and unconditional trust. However, there is a dangerous disease that corrupts this purity, damages the essence of faith, and distances a person from the true station of servitude: shirk. Shirk means associating partners with Allah, viewing His incomparable power as if it were shared with other beings. This disease sometimes manifests openly and sometimes in hidden forms, enveloping a person's heart, mind, and life. Shirk is the most severely rejected deviation in Islamic belief. Because tawheed — faith in the oneness of Allah — is the very essence of Islam. The words "La ilahe illallah" are not merely a phrase, but a life philosophy. These words declare that there is no power, no might, no will other than Allah. Yet superficially accepting this truth is not sufficient. A person must feel this reality in the depths of their heart, live it in every moment of their life, and embrace it with their entire being. What is Shirk and How Does It Emerge? Shirk literally means "partnership." In a religious context, it means associating partners with Allah's essence, attributes, or actions. This partnership sometimes manifests in open forms such as idol worship, while at other times it seeps into a person's life through subtle ways they may not even be aware of. Allah's attributes belong to Him alone. He alone is the Lord, the One who gives life, causes death, provides sustenance, and grants strength. However, when a person forgets or takes this reality lightly, they fall into shirk. For example, if a person views the wealth they possess as the product of their own intelligence and effort, if they attribute their successes to their own power, if they think events occur independently of Allah — then they are in a state of hidden shirk. Hidden shirk is a fungus that grows silently in a person's heart. The individual thinks of themselves as a Muslim, prays, fasts, yet in their heart they have made room for powers other than Allah. Perhaps a sheikh, perhaps their own ego, perhaps worldly possessions. This situation corrupts the purity of faith and destroys the true meaning of servitude. Shirk in Jahiliyyah Society: A Historical Legacy Throughout human history, shirk has been at the center of many societies' ways of life. Pre-Islamic Meccan society is the most striking example of this. In that society, idols were accepted as determining factors in every area of life. A separate idol for trade, a separate idol for war, a separate idol for love... People, by turning to these false deities, forgot Allah, their true Creator. This deviant belief system became established and normalized as a cultural heritage passed down through generations. People grew up with this belief from the day they were born and knew no other way of life. Indeed, the reaction they gave to our Prophet Muhammad's call to tawheed clearly demonstrates this. The Quran conveys the astonishment of the mushrikeen as follows: "Has he made the gods one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing." (Surah Sad, 5) For these people, believing in one Allah was a call that stretched the limits of reason and disrupted the order of life. Yet the truth was the exact opposite. Living bound to thousands of false deities distances a person from freedom and keeps them in constant anxiety and fear. What great slavery it is to have to supplicate to a different power for every matter, to seek refuge in a different force for every situation! Bearing Witness to Allah's Absolute Power: Lessons from Surah An-Naml Allah has revealed many verses in the Quran that cause people to think, reason, and see the truth. Verses 59–64 of Surah An-Naml reveal the irrationality of shirk and Allah's absolute power in the most beautiful way: "Say: Praise be to Allah, and peace upon His chosen servants. Is Allah better, or what they associate ? Or He who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down for you rain from the sky — thereby We caused to grow gardens of joyful beauty whose trees you could not have grown. Is there a deity with Allah? No, but they are a people who ascribe equals. Or He who made the earth a stable ground and placed within it rivers and made for it firmly set mountains and placed between the two seas a barrier. Is there a deity with Allah? No, most of them do not know. Or He who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth. Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember. Or He who guides you through the darkness of the land and sea and who sends the winds as heralds before His mercy. Is there a deity with Allah? Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. Or He who begins creation and then repeats it and who provides for you from the heaven and earth. Is there a deity with Allah? Say: Produce your proof, if you should be truthful." (Surah An-Naml, 59–64) These verses, through successive questions, set the mind in motion. Who created the heavens and the earth? Who sends down the rain? Who grows the trees? Who rescues the one in distress? Who shows the way in darkness? The answer to every question is clear: Allah. So what logic, what justification, what proof is there to worship anyone besides Him or to associate partners with Him? The Destruction Shirk Causes Upon a Person Shirk is not only a sin that leads to punishment in the hereafter. It is also a disease that harms a person in every way in worldly life as well. The negative effects of shirk upon a person are as follows:

  1. It Blocks True Faith Shirk damages the essence of faith, because faith is an indivisible whole. Mixing other powers into submission to Allah corrupts that submission. A person may believe in Allah on one hand, but if they also believe in other powers, this is not genuine faith. True faith is an undivided submission.
  2. It Dulls the Mind and Discernment Shirk dulls a person's ability to think. In the Quran, expressions such as "they do not reason," "they do not think," and "they do not see" are frequently used for the mushrikeen. Because the person within shirk becomes unable to see the truth. Their mind stops working, their logic fails. They ignore the clear signs before them. This enslaves a person to false beliefs, superstitions, and counterfeit values.
  3. It Destroys Peace and Inner Tranquility A person living in shirk can never attain true peace, because they are in constant anxiety. They do not know which power to turn to, they cannot be certain which one will benefit them. One day they seek refuge in a sheikh, the next they wear an amulet, then they look to the stars, visit an astrologer and other fortune tellers... This chaotic state deprives the person of inner peace. Yet complete submission to Allah gives a person deep tranquility and confidence.
  4. It Causes Them to Forget Their Purpose in This World The sole purpose of a person's coming into this world is to worship Allah. This purpose is clearly stated in the Quran: "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 56) However, shirk distances a person from this lofty purpose. It causes them to chase worldly goals and forget their true reason for existence. This forgetfulness renders life meaningless and plunges a person into emptiness.
  5. It Endangers the Hereafter Shirk is the only sin that Allah has declared He will never forgive. In Surah An-Nisa, Allah says: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." (Surah An-Nisa, 48) This verse shows how dangerous shirk is from the perspective of the hereafter. No matter how many good deeds a person has performed in this world, if they die upon shirk, all their deeds are rendered void. The Hidden Faces of Shirk in the Modern Age Today, shirk manifests itself in forms very different from — yet far more insidious than — traditional idol worship. Modern people may not worship idols of stone and wood, but they may be worshipping other "idols." Here are some manifestations of shirk in the modern age:
  6. The Understanding of Power Independent of Allah Many people view qualities they possess — talent, beauty, intelligence, strength — as belonging to their own innate selves. They keep saying "I succeeded," "I earned it," "I did it." Yet all these qualities are gifts from Allah. Viewing them independently of Allah is hidden shirk.
  7. Making One's Own Ego a Deity In the Quran, it is said: "Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire?" (Surah Al-Furqan, 43) This verse criticizes a person placing their own desires, wishes, and passions above the command of Allah. The modern person who acts with the mentality of "I know best," "what is right according to me," and who tries to shape religious and moral values according to their own desires, has in fact made their own ego a deity.
  8. Overemphasizing the Means People attribute the successes, wealth, or happiness in their lives to specific causes. "I became wealthy because I did that job," "I became successful because I met such-and-such person," and so on. It is certainly normal to recognize causes and act accordingly, but forgetting that Allah is the One who truly effects all things is shirk. Foregrounding the means is to cause the true Causer to be forgotten.
  9. Rebelling Against Divine Decree Divine decree (qadar) is everything that Allah has ordained with His absolute knowledge and will. Faith in qadar is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. However, some people, rather than accepting the events that befall them as qadar, constantly rebel, complain, and say "if only it had been otherwise." Rejecting qadar or trying to resist it means not being content with Allah's ordainment, which is itself a form of shirk.
  10. Seeking Himmah from Sheikhs In some Sufi circles, excessive attachment to sheikhs or awliya and the expectation of "himmah" from them is widespread. People use expressions such as "That sheikh prayed for me, it happened thanks to him," or "Such-and-such saint gave himmah." Yet the true path of religion is one that brings a person closer to Allah and fills them with the love of Allah. Placing intermediaries in Allah's position or expecting from them as one would expect from Allah is shirk. The Path to Freedom from Shirk: Tawheed Being freed from shirk is both necessary and possible for every Muslim. This liberation is realized through putting several fundamental principles into practice:
  11. Sincere and Heartfelt Faith Faith is a deep acceptance that takes place in the heart. One who says "La ilahe illallah" with their tongue but carries doubt in their heart cannot be considered to have truly believed. Faith is the heart's affirmation, the tongue's declaration, and the limbs' demonstration through action. To be freed from shirk, one must first sincerely accept the oneness of Allah from the heart.
  12. Appreciating Allah's Power Deeply comprehending that Allah is the Creator and Administrator of all things is the foundation of being freed from shirk. From the stars in the heavens to the emotions in our hearts, from the nations upon the earth to the cells in our bodies — everything is under Allah's control. Seeing this grand picture leads a person to tawheed.
  13. Understanding and Living the Quran The Quran is the word of Allah and the most perfect guide for humanity. Reading the Quran, understanding it, reflecting upon it, and living by it is the most effective means of purification from shirk. The Quran rejects every form of shirk and explains tawheed in the most beautiful way. The more a Muslim strengthens their bond with the Quran, the further shirk retreats from them.
  14. Constant Tawakkul Tawakkul is, after making a plan and doing what one can, completely entrusting the outcome to Allah. The person who practices tawakkul attributes their success not to their own power but to Allah's grace. In failure too, they see Allah's wisdom. This understanding protects a person from both the disease of arrogance and conceit, and from despair and helplessness.
  15. Change of Intention and Practical Steps The transition from shirk to tawheed is not merely a mental transformation. It must also be reflected in practical life. If a person says "There is no power but Allah," they must also demonstrate this belief through their actions. They should spend their wealth in the way of Allah, work for Allah's pleasure, and think only of Allah in all their affairs. Our Prophet Muhammad and our Prophet Ibrahim physically broke the idols. However, what is truly important is breaking the idols in the minds. Today, a Muslim must destroy the false deities in their own heart and mind. They must not allow money, fame, status, or their ego to become "deities." What Tawheed Brings to a Person A person who lives upon tawheed gains great benefits both in this world and in the hereafter:
  16. Inner Peace and Security The person of tawheed is at peace because they trust in Allah. They fear nothing, because they know that everything is in His hands. This deep sense of trust protects a person from the stress, anxiety, and depression brought about by the modern age.
  17. Freedom Tawheed frees a person from all enslaving bonds. They are not a servant to people, not a slave to money, not a captive to status. The person who knows they are only a servant to Allah tastes true freedom and knows that nothing else can enslave them.
  18. Finding the Meaning of Life Tawheed shows a person the true meaning of life. They no longer chase empty goals but turn toward the real objective. They strive to live every moment, every breath, for Allah. This grants life a deep meaning and purpose.
  19. Earning Allah's Mercy and Help In verse 55 of Surah An-Nur, Allah promises those who live upon tawheed: "Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, they worship Me, not associating anything with Me." (Surah An-Nur, 55) This verse gives glad tidings of the worldly and otherworldly reward for living upon tawheed. Allah will empower such servants, bring them to peace, and grant them the finest recompense.
  20. Salvation in the Hereafter Most importantly, a person who dies upon tawheed attains Allah's mercy. A faith free of shirk is the key to paradise. In Surah An-Nisa, Allah says: "Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allah, and are sincere in their religion for Allah — for those will be with the believers. And Allah is going to give the believers a great reward." (Surah An-Nisa, 146) The Trap of Shaytan: The Misconception That "Tawheed is Difficult" Shaytan makes tawheed appear difficult to people, and shirk easy. He whispers: "You already believe in one Allah, what harm is there in trusting others a little too?" — "No need to be so strict" — "Everyone attaches themselves to something, you do the same." Yet this is a great deception. Tawheed is actually what brings ease to a person. Consider the hardship of servitude to thousands of false deities: separate rituals for each, separate vows, separate supplications... And you can never be sure of any of them. Yet how simple and how peaceful it is to worship one Allah alone! In Surah Ibrahim, Shaytan confesses on the Day of Resurrection how he will have misled those who followed him: "And Shaytan will say when the matter has been concluded: Indeed, Allah had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment." (Surah Ibrahim, 22) This verse shows that Shaytan leads people astray not by force, but by deception. And people follow Shaytan of their own free will. Therefore, what must be done to be freed from shirk is to see through Shaytan's game and show resistance against it. Tawheed: Separate Masters, or One Allah? In Surah Yusuf, while the Prophet Yusuf is in prison, he poses the following striking question to the two men beside him: "O two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing?" (Surah Yusuf, 39) This question expresses the very essence of tawheed perfectly. A person will either be divided and scattered among many false powers, or turn toward the one true power. Serving many masters leaves a person helpless. But serving one master — and that master being Allah, the possessor of absolute power — strengthens, comforts, and brings peace to a person. The Beauty of Pure Faith Shirk is a great disease that corrupts the purity of faith, distances a person from Allah, and causes loss both in this world and in the hereafter. However, it is possible to be freed from this disease. A sincere intention, deep reflection, holding firmly to the Quran, and constantly turning to Allah are the means of purification from shirk. A person who lives upon tawheed finds true peace, freedom, and meaning. Every moment of their life becomes an act of worship. Because in every breath, every step, every thought, they remember Allah and trust in Him. Religion finds its true meaning only when it is pure. A faith mixed with shirk is incomplete and distorted. Allah desires from His servants a faith that is immaculate and pure. And this faith opens the doors of endless happiness for a person both in this world and in the hereafter. Today, even though shirk confronts us in different guises in the age we live in, the formula for being freed from it remains the same: "La ilahe illallah" — There is no deity but Allah. It is not enough to say this word only with the tongue; it must be affirmed by the heart, comprehended by the mind, and lived in action. A person who worships only Allah, trusts only in Him, fears only Him, and hopes only in Him — is a true believer. And such a person will never suffer loss, neither in this world nor in the hereafter. May Allah purify us all from shirk, cause us to live upon tawheed and to die upon tawheed, and make us among those who possess pure, unadulterated faith.
