Shirk and Salvation: The Importance of Faith in and Submission to God

"Şirk", İslam'da Allah'a ortak koşma anlamına gelen, imanın en ciddi ihlalidir. "La ilahe illaAllah" (Allah'tan başka ilah yoktur) ifadesi, mutlak gücün yalnızca Allah'a ait olduğunu vurgular. Şirk, kulun Allah'a olan sevgi ve güvenini zayıflatır. Tüm ilahi sıfatlar yalnızca Allah'a aittir; başka varlıklara bu sıfatları atfetmek veya kendinde görmek şirk sayılır.

The word shirk literally means “partnership,” and in Islamic belief it refers to associating partners with God. The Qur’an clearly expresses the truth that God is the only deity through the declaration “La ilaha illa Allah” (“There is no god except God”). This statement affirms that no being other than God can be divine and that He alone possesses absolute power and authority. However, this truth often remains at a superficial level of understanding and does not always transform into a deeper realization.
Shirk is the most serious violation of faith and submission to God. It weakens the love and trust that a believer should have for God in their heart. In Islam, no being shares in God’s attributes. All divine attributes belong exclusively to Him, and claiming to possess them independently or attributing them to another being constitutes shirk.
For example, the attribute of wealth may be used for humans. Yet this can only be understood correctly if it is recognized that such wealth ultimately comes from God. If a person believes that their wealth is obtained solely through their own power, independent of God, this becomes a form of shirk.
In essence, shirk means forgetting God’s power and evaluating people or events as if they exist independently of Him. It is the assumption that control belongs to oneself or to other beings instead of God. Being in a state of shirk causes a believer to lose trust in God and leads to a lack of reliance upon Him (tawakkul).
Shirk is not merely a problem related to belief in God; it can manifest in many aspects of daily life. Many actions, words, and thoughts may indicate shirk:

  1. Belief in Independent Power
If a person believes that qualities such as power, beauty, or intelligence belong to them independently, this is shirk. All such qualities are blessings granted by God.
  2. Opposition to Art and Science
Although Islam is a religion of freedom, some groups reject art, science, and beauty. This is also a form of shirk. No one can share in God’s authority to declare what is lawful or forbidden. God has given humans intellect; denying the use of that intellect can amount to attributing authority that belongs only to God.
  3. Overemphasizing Means
If people believe that their success, wealth, or abilities come purely from their own effort and power, this is shirk. All of these ultimately depend on God’s decree. Saying “I did it entirely by myself” can imply denying God’s power.
  4. Rejecting Destiny (Qadar)
Destiny is a reality under God’s absolute control. Resisting destiny or believing that it can be changed independently of God is a form of shirk. Living what has been written in destiny is part of submitting to God.
  5. Seeking Help from Sheikhs or Saints
Requesting spiritual assistance from sheikhs or saints and attributing trust and reliance to them instead of God is also shirk. This implies acknowledging a power independent of God rather than directing trust solely to Him.
Freedom from shirk is achieved not only by believing in God but also by recognizing that all power and authority belong exclusively to Him. A person must sincerely accept that no being other than God has the power to bring harm or benefit.
Escaping shirk requires dedicating one’s entire life to God—turning to Him in every matter and trusting only in Him. A believer should be content with God’s decree in every circumstance and live every moment with trust in Him.
To remain distant from shirk, a person should detach their heart from excessive reliance on people and events and turn solely to God, constantly praying to Him. The most effective way to be freed from shirk is to sincerely say “La ilaha illa Allah” from the heart and accept that God alone is the true deity.
A person who lives with this belief accepts that everything and every event occurs by God’s decree. They rely only on God and act with trust in Him in all their deeds.
Shirk is the belief in power and control independent of God. In reality, there is no power, no strength, and no authority except God. A believer must not accept any deity besides God in their heart and should place their trust solely in Him in all actions.
Staying away from shirk brings peace, happiness, and blessing into a believer’s life, filling every moment and every action with submission to God. Freedom from shirk is not merely a matter of belief; it is a life lived in complete submission to God in every aspect.
