Song Lyrics That May Lead to Shirk and What Muslims Should Be Mindful Of

Bu metin, müziğin sanatsal değeri ile İslami inançlar arasındaki hassas dengeyi ele alıyor. Şarkı sözlerinin bazen Allah'a ortak koşma (şirk) veya İslami değerlere aykırı mesajlar içerebildiğine dikkat çekiyor. Modern popüler müzikte yaygın olan, insanı Allah'tan bağımsız gösteren ve aşırı benmerkezci yaşam tarzını yücelten ifadelere karşı Müslümanların dikkatli olması gerektiğini vurguluyor.

Music is an important form of art through which people express their emotions, convey social messages, and carry cultural values. However, song lyrics are not merely a means of entertainment; sometimes, consciously or unconsciously, they may contain messages that can harm beliefs, values, and moral principles. In this context, an important point that individuals with Islamic faith should pay attention to is whether the messages in song lyrics lead to associating partners with Allah (shirk) or denying His verses. Indeed, in Surah An-Nisa, verse 140, Allah clearly commands believers to avoid gatherings where disbelief is expressed.
A significant portion of modern popular music is filled with expressions that rebel against Allah and destiny. At the center of these lyrics is often the idea that humans are independent beings, detached from Allah, and that their fate depends solely on their own efforts. In some songs, an excessively self-centered lifestyle is glorified, almost mocking the names and attributes of Allah. For example, phrases like “Why did you abandon me?” or “Life has not treated me fairly” contain elements of اعتراض (rebellion) against divine destiny.
Such lyrics often place human love at the center and tie a person’s entire existence to another individual. This can lead individuals to forget the Hereafter and the existence of Allah. Songs that include expressions criticizing or rejecting Allah’s mercy, justice, and wisdom may unknowingly bring listeners closer to shirk.
Islam commands that individuals worship only Allah. A person cannot associate partners with Him in either thoughts or actions. However, due to the powerful influence of music as a means of communication, individuals may unconsciously adopt expressions containing disbelief. This can desensitize the heart toward Allah and gradually bring a person closer to disbelief. As stated in the verse:
> “And it has already been revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and ridiculed, do not sit with them until they engage in another conversation; otherwise, you would be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together.” (Nisa, 140)
This warning clearly indicates that environments where Allah and His verses are disrespected can be harmful to a person.
According to Islam, listening to music is not inherently forbidden; however, the content of song lyrics is crucial. Songs that rebel against Allah’s verses, criticize destiny, or encourage shirk are dangerous for Muslims. A believer should question how the songs they listen to affect them and how they shape their faith. Because words that invite disbelief and shirk are considered actions that Allah has forbidden.
If a person continues to listen to such songs and turns this into a habit, over time they may begin to adopt the path of hypocrites and disbelievers. Therefore, individuals who are devoted to Allah must be extremely careful when choosing the songs and types of music they listen to.
In conclusion, songs appeal to the human soul and influence an individual’s way of thinking. Muslims may listen to music for enjoyment, but they must pay close attention to the messages conveyed in the lyrics. Songs that promote shirk, rebellion against destiny, or mock the verses of Allah should be avoided. Such content harms a person’s spiritual state and may unknowingly lead them toward associating partners with Allah.
It should not be forgotten that faith is manifested not only in the heart but also in words and actions. Powerful tools like song lyrics can have both positive and negative effects on faith. Therefore, every Muslim should be conscious of the content of the songs they listen to and, when necessary, choose to stay away from harmful lyrics.
