Humanity’s Turning Toward the Truth

Bu yazı, İslam'daki şirk kavramını (Allah'a ortak koşma) inceliyor. Cahiliye dönemindeki putperestlikten tevhid inancına geçişi ele alırken, şirkin toplumlar üzerindeki etkilerini ve insanların nasıl sahte tanrılara yöneldiğini anlatıyor. Makale, tevhide geçiş sürecinde kişinin dikkat etmesi gereken hususları da açıklayarak, İslam'ın getirdiği tek tanrı inancının önemini vurguluyor.

Throughout human history, shirk (associating partners with God) has persisted as a way of life in many societies. Shirk involves exalting false deities in place of God and allowing these false gods to become determining forces in human life. Mecca during the pre-Islamic period—known as the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)—is a clear example of this condition. Islam, however, rejected this deviation and called people to tawhid, the belief in the oneness of God and faith in Him alone.
This article examines what shirk is, its effects on human beings, and the transition from shirk to tawhid, while also explaining what a person should consider during this transformation.
In societies of Jahiliyyah, shirk was a cultural legacy passed down through generations. Influenced by their communities, people forgot God and turned toward false deities. Idols were regarded as the regulators of trade, war, love, and other worldly matters. This distorted perception appeared to people as a normal way of life.
Indeed, the Qur’an describes how the polytheists of Mecca were astonished by the Prophet Muhammad’s call to believe in one God and rejected it:
> “Has he made the gods into one God? Indeed, this is a strange thing.”(Qur’an, Sad 38:5)
These people believed they needed independent powers to manage their worldly affairs, failing to realize that these false deities possessed no real power. God alone is the true owner and regulator of everything.
Tawhid means acknowledging the oneness of God and worshipping only Him. People must recognize that all their provision and the security they experience come from God. The Qur’an emphasizes this in Surah Quraysh:
> “The One who fed them against hunger and gave them security against fear.”(Qur’an, Quraysh 106:4)
While a person living in shirk organizes their life around idols, a person who turns to God accepts that everything is under His control. This transformation becomes possible through a change in perspective. A person must realize that false deities are nothing more than illusions and seek refuge only in God.
Satan tries to make belief in tawhid appear difficult and restrictive. However, this is merely a deception. While shirk leads a person to great suffering in this world and the hereafter, tawhid brings peace and security. The Qur’an explains how Satan deceives people:
> “When the matter has been decided, Satan will say: ‘Indeed God promised you the promise of truth, and I also promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you and you responded to me. So do not blame me; blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. Indeed, I deny your associating me with God before. Surely the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.’”(Qur’an, Ibrahim 14:22)
For this reason, freeing oneself from shirk requires a sincere change of intention. Shirk is like a pair of dark glasses that obscure everything; removing those glasses leads a person to the truth.
In the transition from shirk to tawhid, a change of intention is decisive. However, this change must also be supported by actions. A person should demonstrate this transformation by using their possessions in ways that please God. For example, they should not hesitate to spend their wealth in the cause of God. The Qur’an gives believers this promise:
> “Whoever believes in God and is mindful of Him—He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect. Whoever relies upon God, He is sufficient for him. Indeed, God will accomplish His purpose. God has set a measure for all things.”(Qur’an, At-Talaq 65:2–3)
A believer must firmly establish their trust in God and know that He is the owner of everything.
The Prophet Muhammad and the Prophet Abraham physically destroyed the idols in the Kaaba, removing the symbols of shirk. Yet these actions were not merely physical acts of destruction; they also aimed to dismantle the logic of shirk itself. Today, what must be done is to destroy this mindset intellectually.
A person should organize their life according to the guidance of the Qur’an and submit only to God instead of serving thousands of false deities. The Qur’an expresses this reality as follows:
> “O my fellow prisoners, are separate lords better, or God, the One, the Supreme?”(Qur’an, Yusuf 12:39)
Shirk leads a person to great loss both in this world and in the hereafter. However, transitioning from shirk to tawhid is possible, and this transformation begins with a sincere change of intention. A person must acknowledge that everything they possess comes from God and must worship Him alone.
This transformation grants an individual true peace and security. Ultimately, a person who abandons shirk turns away from “separate lords” and directs themselves solely to God, thereby attaining happiness in both this world and the hereafter.
