Human life has been created with great order and wisdom. Every detail of this order is a manifestation of God’s infinite power and will. A believer should remember this reality in every event they encounter and shape their life with this awareness. However, there is a concept that weakens trust in God and can lead a person into a dangerous state: hidden shirk (associating partners with God in subtle ways). This article discusses the importance of trusting in God (tawakkul), the effects of hidden shirk on human life, and how one can avoid this danger.
A person who turns toward God places their trust only in Him, because God is the Sovereign and Creator of everything. Not a single leaf falls without His permission. A believer who acts with this awareness does not fall into anxiety or despair when faced with events. At every moment of life, they keep their trust in their Lord alive, knowing that every event and every trial in the world occurs by God’s permission. The Qur’an points to this reality as follows:
> “Fighting has been prescribed for you, though you dislike it. But perhaps you dislike something which is good for you, and perhaps you love something which is bad for you. God knows, while you do not know.” (Qur’an, Al-Baqarah 2:216)
God knows best what is good for the believer. Therefore, a person who has faith acts with acceptance of destiny at every moment of life.
Hidden shirk is a danger that arises when trust in God is not complete. When a person fails to fully appreciate God’s infinite power or begins to place trust in other beings, they may fall into hidden shirk. For example, panicking when faced with a difficult situation or drifting away from reliance on God due to anxiety about the future can be signs of hidden shirk.
When someone thinks, “Generally I trust God, but sometimes I fail to rely on Him,” this actually shows that they do not fully believe in God’s power and the goodness of destiny. This condition is a result of weakness in faith and indicates that the person is seeking helpers other than God.
The Qur’an warns about following the majority without reflection:
> “If you obey most of those on earth, they will lead you away from the path of God. They follow nothing but conjecture, and they do nothing but lie.”(Qur’an, Al-An‘am 6:116)
Hidden shirk weakens a person’s submission to God and fills life with unrest. For instance, if someone sees the difficulties they encounter as mere misfortune and reacts with rebellion, it shows that they are not content with God’s decree and may be falling into a form of hidden shirk. A person who does not trust God cannot find peace in the face of hardship; instead, they fall into deeper anxiety.
The effects of hidden shirk can also be seen in daily life. When a person achieves success and attributes it solely to their own intelligence or effort, they forget that it is through God’s help. Yet the Qur’an reminds us that humans have no independent power:
> “You cannot will unless God wills. Surely God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”
(Qur’an, Al-Insan 76:30)
To avoid falling into hidden shirk, a person should constantly review their life and shape their thoughts in a way that pleases God. The following steps are important:
- Strengthening Trust in God (Tawakkul):
Remember in every event that everything happens by God’s permission and turn to Him with complete submission. - Prayer and Reflection:
Through prayer and contemplation of God’s power, a person can strengthen their trust in Him. - Awareness of Destiny:
Never forget that every event experienced is part of the destiny determined by God. - Gratitude and Patience:
Being grateful and patient in the face of hardship is one of the most effective ways to stay away from hidden shirk. - Sincere Self-Examination:
A person should constantly evaluate their thoughts and reactions and strive to stay away from shirk.
Trust in God and reliance upon Him are foundations of true faith. However, a person must always remain cautious of the danger of hidden shirk that weakens this trust. In every moment of life, one should remember that everything is under God’s control, seek the wisdom behind every event, and submit to Him.
A person who turns to God with complete submission and stays away from hidden shirk will find peace both in this world and in the hereafter. It should never be forgotten that unwavering trust in God is the strongest support that will keep a person standing even in the most difficult moments.
